It is so important to be able to ask your therapist about the education and experience she or he brings to you. A qualified therapist will be helpful and happy to share educational info as well as licensure information.

Is massage therapy painful?

Massage treatments should be custom tailored to your needs. From appointment to appointment the body can go through changes such as injuries, added stress or a positive return to balance. Because these changes occur, it is important to communicate your specific issues at the beginning of each and every appointment. Any painful part of a massage is at the patients discretion and should be a constructive discomfort such as when stretching sore muscles. Communication is the key to a productive session and your input is of utmost importance.

How much do I need to undress?

Disrobing ( when necessary) for a massage treatment is ALWAYS to the comfort level of the client. The client is appropriately draped at all times. At the start of a session complete privacy is provided to undress, you then get on the massage table between the draping sheets . A blanket is provided for warmth.. Only the area being worked on is ever uncovered

What can massage therapy help me with?

Many people receive massage therapy for as many different reasons. Arthritis, muscular injuries, stress injuries, fibromyalgia, athletes in training, and health maintenance are only a few good reasons to get therapeutic massage. Muscular therapy when properly performed, can help isolate and identify imbalances in the body and help to correct them. Repetitive stresses at work, or school, injuries, or a wellness program are all compelling reasons to start a massage program.

How often should /can I be worked on?

Fresh injuries are usually treated multiple times weekly to prevent internal scarring of the connective tissue and ease pain. Chronic injuries, usually respond well to regular intervals between treatments. For a wellness program bi weekly or monthly should suffice. Discuss the needs and expectations of therapy with your therapist to find a good schedule for your needs. Your body will not respond appropriately to daily massage, as your lymphatic system needs time to rid the body of unwanted toxins and interstitial debris
The reason for seeking treatment is usually the factor that determines how often you should receive treatment.

Does massage replace a workout routine?

Your workouts will be enhanced by massage therapy. Increased circulation provides a great flow of oxygen and venous blood return. Added muscular flexibility provides additional benefit to any and all workout, and massage can be specifically applied to address your athletic needs. Stretching and joint mobilization increases flexibility and mobility and can aid in improved performance.

Will massage help me recover from injuries?

The type of massage or therapy, should be determined by both you and your therapist. Level of pain or discomfort and personal comfort level is the key to deciding this. Other factors include your current state of health including blood pressure and medications (if any).

How do I find a qualified therapist?

Finding a qualified therapist is important. Every therapist has a different approach to massage. Ask what the educational background consist of. Ask yourself ....what are you looking to get from the massage?
Are you looking to simply relax, or are you interested in enhancing your athletic performance? Are you injured? Experience, education and technique are as individual as your needs Open dialog with your therapist before you start treatments is advised.
